Fourthly there are those around Empedocles, who make the heavenly vortex the reason for the earthâs stability, and fifthly there are those who say that its uniformity and equipoise are the reason, as with Anaximander and Plato.
That would certainly seem to exclude Anaximander from employing a vortex to keep the earth stationary. As Anaximander is here associated with Plato, it would be odd for Anaximander to have any physical reason for the earthâs immobility. To quote Plato, Phaedo, 108eâ109a7 here:
